Universal home visits empower households to protect maternal and child health

Universal home visits empower households to protect maternal and child health

Women and children in Nigeria continue to face high risks of illness and death. A five-year project in Bauchi State, Northern Nigeria, implemented universal home visits to pregnant women and their spouses and measured the impact on maternal and child health outcomes. The visits were different in several key ways: they were universal, covering all households in participating wards; they shared evidence about risk factors that households could act on themselves; and they involved men (male visitors visited the spouses of the visited pregnant women). The cluster randomised controlled trial compared outcomes between visited and non-visited wards.

Webinar speakers and short videos will present findings and implications of the project. This webinar is co-organised with the West Africa Health Organisation, providing support to IMCHA research teams in the region for knowledge translation and uptake by decision makers. The Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency collaborated with Federation of Muslim Women of Nigeria (FOMWAN, Bauchi State Chapter), a Nigerian NGO, and CIET in McGill University, Canada, to carry out this work. The research is part of the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative, jointly funded by Global Affairs Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the International Development Research Centre.
