Video: Digital transformation of evidence-informed decision-making: enhancing gender-inclusive approaches for equitable social and health outcomes

Organisation/s: Center for Rapid Evidence Synthesis (ACRES)
Details: In this video, Pastan Lusiba, a senior research scientist at ACRES talks about the digital transformation of EIDM and enhancing gender-inclusive approaches to have equitable and health outcomes. The advent of digital technologies like machine learning, AI, and chatboxes (e.g., ChatGPT 4.0) has revolutionised access to data and information, enabling faster and more scalable decision-making processes. Since 2020, interest in leveraging these tools for Evidence-Informed Decision Making (EIDM) has surged, but their application remains limited and often requires substantial user input. To address these challenges, ACRES and its partners Sunbird AI are implementing the Digital Gender – inclusive tools for evidence use project, aimed to design and explore digital gender-inclusive tools that augment EIDM approaches, such as the Rapid Response Service. This project seeks to enhance timeliness, efficiency, and effectiveness for equitable social and health outcomes. Currently, we are in the process identification/mapping stage, where ACRES and Sunbird AI are collaboratively mapping the EIDM process, benchmarking against the Rapid Response Service process.

Twitter chat: EIDM INNOVATION IN AFRICA #9 Accessibilité et utilisation des données probantes au niveau décentralisé à l'ère de la révolution numérique: défis, leviers et opportunités pour l'Afrique francophone

Organisation/s: Africa Evidence Network (AEN)

Details: Welcome to the #AEN Innovations Series! Check out this innovation.

Video: Mapping the way forward: ACRES leads effort to inform Uganda’s national health research agenda

Organisation/s: Center for Rapid Evidence Synthesis (ACRES)
Details: Sherry Ahirirwe, a research scientist at ACRES, talks about the development of a national health research agenda in Uganda that has traditionally relied on expert opinion and disease burden. However, this approach has limitations. To address this, ACRES is leading an effort to create an evidence gap map of all health research conducted in Uganda between 2010 and 2022. This map will inform the revision of the 2010 Health Research Agenda in collaboration with the Uganda National Health Research Organisation and the Ministry of Health. This map will guide the next phase of priority setting, involving stakeholder engagement through an online survey, Delphi exercises, and a physical meeting. ACRES aims to update the evidence gap map periodically, making it publicly available to guide research and access to evidence.

Organisation/s: African Center for Equitable Development (ACED)
Details: In this blog post, Ariel Hardy Houessou, a knowledge translation specialist at ACED shares about the EPA Center of Excellence, which is a joint initiative by the African Center for Equitable Development (ACED) and the Agricultural and Rural Prospective Initiative (IPAR). He mentions that it is a unique framework aimed at bridging the gap between research, policies, and action in Francophone Africa. The approach used to better ground its intervention relies on mapping the ecosystems of each country, which is useful to better understand the actors, their relationships, their needs (in capacity building, evidence mobilisation, and valorisation), and the best practices promoting evidence-informed policies (EIP). Country notes and other outputs will guide the Center of Excellence to, among other things, fill identified gaps, document (for sharing purposes) best practices in EIP, establish country Communities of Practice (CoPs), and inform the community of actors interested in Evidence-Informed Policymaking (EIP) in Francophone West Africa.

That’s why they operate the Temporary Food Assistance Program (TFAP) which takes a two-pronged approach to fighting hunger. First, it rescues surplus food that would otherwise go to waste - from farms, manufacturers, retailers, and more. This food is then quickly distributed to families in need, ensuring it doesn’t end up in landfills. Second, TFAP provides temporary food assistance to those facing hard times, with a special focus on vulnerable communities.

Blog: Prioritising early learning research in sub-Saharan Africa for equitable learning outcomes

Organisation/s: Education Sub Saharan Africa (ESSA) and the Research for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre
Details: This blog was written by Samuel Asare, Senior Research Manager, Education Sub Saharan Africa (ESSA), and Priscilla Bretuo, Ronald Omuthe, and Basirat Razaq-Shuaib, Doctoral Students at the REAL Centre, Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge. It builds on a previous analysis highlighting limited research addressing early years in sub-Saharan Africa, and continues to draw attention to the need to prioritise early learning for equitable learning outcomes. The key message of the blog is that there is increasing concern that only a small portion of education research addresses the early years of education where children get opportunities to develop better foundation for the future.
